Position Profile

The Senior Director, Branding and Communications, is responsible for leading strategic communications and executing key projects that support the goals of the Blue Meridian. Reporting to the Chief Brand Officer, the Senior Director works closely with the other members of the Branding & Communications team as well as portfolio leads and departmental leaderships. The Senior Director will have responsibility for the strategic guidance and day-to-day management of their team’s work and serve as a go-to resource for the internal team and consultants.

Primary Responsibilities[1]

The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:

Communications Strategy & Execution

  • Lead the creation and ongoing refinement portion of Blue Meridian’s strategic communications plan.
  • Lead implementation for significant portions of this plan, especially corporate brand building activities
  • Oversee development of strategy and messaging for Blue Meridian’s investment portfolios.
  • Support communication needs related to the Investor Relations’ teams work in fundraising and partner relations.

Public/Media Relations

  • Craft and execute strategies for proactive media engagement across national and trade press and various mediums (print, TV, podcast), including reaching out to media contacts, developing press kits and preparing talking points for staff.
  • Serve as a first point of contact for inbound media inquiries and manage organizational response to media including developing responses, statements and other materials.
  • Craft and execute strategies for speaking engagements or other outlets where Blue Meridian’s leaders can be showcased, including developing pitches, researching influencers, and drafting talking points.
  • Lead crisis communications including implementing crisis protocols, managing external vendors, and chairing the internal response team. Working with the Chief Brand Officer, CEO, and other senior leaders, manage strategic responses to crisis situations. Draft statements and talking points, conduct research, provide status updates, and coordinate with outside groups as needed.
  • Stay abreast of the sector that Blue Meridian operates in as well as rapidly evolving external context in order to evolve our messaging and activities to protect our brand reputation with our target audiences. Be a proactive source of intelligence to Chief Brand Officer and others.

Content & Design

  • Develop content strategies for branded newsletter and manage development of other written content and then oversee dissemination of this content.
  • Lead creation of digital strategy and oversee execution: website, social media, and email marketing, overseeing analytical tools.
  • Oversee evolution and maintenance of the visual identify to ensure a strong design aesthetic and brand consistency across the organization and all collateral.

Leadership & Departmental Management

  • Represent the Branding & Communications department by attending or leading discussions with the broader team, senior leaders, investees, and funding Partners.
  • Supervise a team of staff, ensuring their projects are completed on schedule and resources are well-allocated, and help leverage Chief Brand Officer appropriately. Coach and develop staff to ensure high performance and engagement.
  • Recruit top-level agencies and consultants required to develop strong strategies and to successfully execute; retain their services, negotiate contracts and review their work to ensure it meets the organization’s expectations; supervise their work including coordinating across vendors to ensure holistic activation.



  • Aligned with Blue Meridian’s mission core values.
  • At least 15 years of hands-on professional experience in the field of communications, including at least 10 years of leadership experience in developing and implementing strategic communications plans and dealing with the media. Bachelor’s or graduate degree in a related subject is an advantage. Experience in philanthropy or financial services is a plus.
  • Perspective from direct experience living or working in communities with significant low income or otherwise disenfranchised peoples desirable.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, including very strong attention to detail and the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a fluid, dynamic environment while continuing to meet deadlines.
  • Exceptional written communication skills. Must be able to draft content for external materials in line with Blue Meridian’s brand voice, messaging, and strategy, edit and improve others’ writing, and have excellent proofreading skills.
  • Outstanding verbal communication skills, comfortable engaging with and presenting at senior levels. Strong track record of successfully applying a brand’s visual design to a variety of collateral (video, website, signage, brochures, etc.). Must be able to draft PowerPoint presentations and direct or revise others’ work so materials are in line with Blue Meridian’s visual identity.
  • Experience managing and directing the work of professional consultants holding them accountable for delivering high-quality products in a timely manner.
  • Experience managing direct reports including holding them accountable for delivering against their goals, helping to manage workloads, and supporting development.
  • Excellent judgment, able to anticipate needs and proactively solve problems and know when to leverage senior leaders.
  • Highly energetic, self-motivated and entrepreneurial, able to balance a meticulous and highly rigorous professional approach with a flexible and empathetic responsiveness to the needs of others. While skilled at thinking and working independently and advocating own point of view, respects and solicits the contributions of others.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with a professional and genial demeanor, and the ability to work with and lead people with different backgrounds and experiences.
  • Strong computer skills with extensive knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and the ability to master new software
